Rory McIlroy Makes History with Second Consecutive Masters Triumph
Rory McIlroy has cemented his place among the greatest in golf, securing his second consecutive Masters title in a dramatic finish at Augusta National Golf Club. Finishing with an 11-under par, the 36-year-old Northern Irishman fended off a late charge from world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to claim a one-shot victory on April 12, 2026.
With this victory, McIlroy becomes only the fourth player in the tournament’s 90-year history to successfully defend his title, joining an elite group that includes Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods. This triumph marks McIlroy’s sixth career major championship, placing him level with Nick Faldo and one ahead of Seve Ballesteros.
A Nerve-Wracking Finale
The final round was a test of endurance and composure. McIlroy faced a tense conclusion on the 18th hole, where he hit his tie shot behind a tree; however, he managed a bogey to preserve his lead. Scheffler nearly forced a playoff after a birdie putt on the 17th narrowly missed, although playing 4-under for the day.
Following the win, McIlroy shared emotional moments with his wife, Erica Stoll, his daughter, Poppy, and his parents during the Green Jacket ceremony.
President Trump Hails McIlroy as a ‘Legend’
The victory drew high praise from U.S. President Donald Trump, who took to Truth Social on April 13 to congratulate the champion. Trump, who has played golf with McIlroy in the past, described the golfer’s performance as “tremendous” under “intense pressure.”

“Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another Great Championship, The Masters!” Trump wrote. “He performed tremendously under intense pressure, something which few people would be able to even sense about doing. With each year, Rory is becoming more and more a LEGEND!”
The President also noted the overall quality of the field, stating that the level of professional golfers today has develop into “extraordinary” and that all competitors should be proud of their play over the weekend.
Looking Ahead to Doral
McIlroy’s historic run continues as he prepares for his next appearance. President Trump expressed his anticipation for the upcoming Cadillac Championship, which begins on April 30 at Trump National Doral in Miami.
This victory further elevates McIlroy’s standing on the all-time majors list, as he now chases the record of seven held by legends such as Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Gene Sarazen, and Harry Vardon.
