Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Tensions between Moscow and London have escalated following a deadly attack in the Russian city of Bryansk. The Kremlin has directly accused the United Kingdom of involvement in the strike, which utilized long-range, British-made cruise missiles.
Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the Ukrainian attack on Bryansk, using Storm Shadow missiles manufactured in the UK, would have been impossible without the direct involvement of British military specialists. He argued that the technology requires in-depth technical assistance from the supplying nation.
“These missiles could not have been launched without the involvement of British specialists,” Peskov said, as quoted on Friday, March 13, 2025.
Bryansk Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz initially reported that Tuesday’s attack killed six people and injured 42 others. Bogomaz strongly condemned the bombing as an inhumane act of terror against civilians.
“On Wednesday, the death toll had risen to seven people, and it was confirmed that the attack involved Storm Shadow missiles,” Bogomaz said.
Peskov further added that these attacks underscore the continued demand for Russia’s military campaign against Ukraine. He claimed the success of that operation is the only way to ensure the safety of Russian territory from similar attacks in the future.
“The success of this campaign will ensure that these barbaric actions by the Kyiv regime do not continue. One of the goals is to demilitarize Kyiv and deprive it of the ability to carry out such attacks,” Peskov stated.
Ukraine has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it targeted a local microelectronics factory. Yet, media reports indicate the strike occurred during a shift change, when many employees were walking towards the exits, resulting in a high number of casualties.
The Russian Foreign Ministry revealed that seven British cruise missiles were used in the attack. The ministry stated that the UK and other countries supporting the Ukrainian government must bear full responsibility for the civilian deaths in Bryansk.
“London is prepared to bring the conflict to a new level in terms of damage and loss of life by using Ukraine as a proxy,” a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry read.
