The conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory. Amidst the ongoing hostilities, reports indicate that Russia has been sharing intelligence with Iran, potentially aiding Tehran in targeting U.S. Military assets in the region. This development underscores the increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics at play.

According to two U.S. Intelligence officials, the information provided by Russia could be used by Iran to launch attacks against American targets in the Gulf.

The Washington Post reported that the same two officials stated Russia is suspected of providing intelligence to Iran that could assist in attacks on U.S. Warships, aircraft, and other military assets in the Middle East.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss sensitive information publicly. U.S. Intelligence has not yet found evidence that Moscow has directly instructed Iran on how to utilize the information in the ongoing conflict.

Should the reports prove accurate, this would mark the first indication of Russia’s indirect involvement in the war, which began after a joint U.S. And Israeli strike against Iran a week ago.

Russia Not Supplying Weapons to Iran

The Kremlin has stated it is not providing weaponry to Iran, its close ally currently engaged in conflict with the U.S. And Israel. According to Russia’s state news agency TASS and Reuters, Iran has not contacted Moscow requesting any assistance, including weapons supplies.

The assertion was made by the Kremlin when questioned by reporters on March 6, regarding whether Russia planned to offer aid to Iran, specifically through the provision of weapons, in addition to political support.

“Regarding the current situation, there have been no requests from Iran,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday, March 5.

“Our consistent position is known to everyone. It remains unchanged,” he added.

Close Ties Between Russia and Iran

Russia is a key partner of Iran in the Middle East. Moscow has previously condemned the U.S. And Israeli attacks on Iran as an unjustified act of armed aggression.

Earlier in 2025, Iran and Russia signed a strategic partnership agreement encompassing cooperation in countering shared threats. However, the agreement does not include a mutual defense obligation, unlike Russia’s security pact with North Korea.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi affirmed that military cooperation between Iran and Russia is not fresh and is not a secret.

“Military cooperation between Iran and Russia is not a secret. We have cooperated in the past, and this cooperation continues, and I hope it will continue in the future,” Abbas Araghchi said in an interview with NBC News.
