Russian Spring Offensive Begins with Heavy Losses, Ukraine Claims

Kyiv – A large-scale Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine has commenced, marked by significant casualties on the Russian side, according to Ukrainian officials. The renewed push comes after a period of increased attacks and signals a potential escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the offensive is resulting in “greater Russian losses,” suggesting that Ukrainian forces are inflicting substantial damage on the attacking troops. This assessment comes as reports emerge of intense fighting in the eastern regions of the country.

The offensive began following a noticeable increase in Russian attacks. According to early reports, three people have died as a result of a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine, with air raid sirens sounding across the country.

The development underscores the continued volatility of the situation in Ukraine and the potential for further escalation. President Zelenskyy has been actively seeking international support and diplomatic solutions, including a proposed meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelenskyy has challenged Putin to a meeting in Istanbul this week, responding to a statement from the Kremlin indicating Putin’s willingness to negotiate directly with Ukraine to conclude the war. Zelenskyy stated on Telegram and X, “I will be waiting for Putin in Turkey on Thursday,” and expressed hope that Russia “will not seek excuses this time.”

A previous meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin took place in 2019, during a summit in Paris where an agreement was reached for a full ceasefire in eastern Ukraine. However, that agreement ultimately failed to hold.

The call for talks comes as U.S. President Donald Trump urged Zelenskyy to “immediately” accept any peace plan proposed by Putin, stating that it would allow both sides to determine if a deal is possible.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Russia aims to fully annex the Donbas region of Ukraine as a condition for peace. The Donbas region has been a focal point of the conflict for years, and its status remains a key obstacle to any potential resolution. The announcement could influence future diplomatic talks.
