A Russian warplane briefly violated Estonian airspace on March 18, prompting a response from NATO allies and raising fresh concerns about regional security. The incident underscores ongoing tensions between Russia and the NATO alliance.

According to a written statement from the Estonian Foreign Ministry, the Russian SU-30 fighter jet entered Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island for approximately one minute.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that Italian Air Force jets responded to the incursion, and that there was no immediate threat to Estonian security. “NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission has been operating in Estonia since 2004, and once again we have seen that this mission works well and according to procedures,” Tsahkna said.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal shared on social media that Russia’s behavior remains unchanged, stating, “NATO is working. Our airspace is constantly monitored, protected and defended.”

The Estonian Defense Ministry also reported that the aircraft did not have a flight plan and did not establish two-way radio communication with Estonian air traffic services.

Following the incident, the Russian ambassador’s chargé d’affaires in Tallinn was summoned to the Estonian Foreign Ministry and presented with a formal protest note regarding the airspace violation.

Russian warplanes have violated Estonian airspace on multiple occasions in recent years, according to reports. The development could influence future diplomatic talks and security measures in the region.
