A well-known Lithuanian woman has detailed a recent medical procedure to restore a lost tooth, highlighting the challenges of bone loss and the recovery process. Rūta Banionytė, founder of “Šokoladas Sielai” (Chocolate for the Soul), shared her experience following a complex dental implant surgery.
The procedure, which lasted approximately two hours, involved a sinus lift, bone grafting, and the placement of a dental implant, all performed in a single operation. “They solved everything at once so I could have a tooth again,” Banionytė explained.
Banionytė revealed she had been aware of a predisposition to bone loss for some time. “My bone tends to dissolve. I tried for a long time to stop that process, but it didn’t work with my back teeth,” she said. “I had to have one removed last year, and now this is the next part of the journey – how to get back what’s lost.”
Following the surgery, Banionytė reported no immediate complications, praising the skill of the surgeon. However, she described the experience of remaining with her mouth open for an extended period as challenging. “It was a challenge just to be in the process and watch it. Just keeping your mouth open for 2 hours – that’s a long time. There was a moment when I didn’t even understand if I was still holding my mouth open or not,” she noted with a smile.
The recovery period is now underway, and while Banionytė says she is feeling better, she emphasized the initial discomfort. “When the anesthesia wore off, the healing stage began – pain, pulling, swelling. I definitely wouldn’t have managed without medication,” she stated.
In the days immediately following the procedure, Banionytė experienced significant facial swelling, making even simple actions like tilting her head or opening her mouth tricky. “That’s my reality these days – physical discomfort and tension,” she said.
Adding to the challenges, Banionytė’s household was also dealing with illness. “My child was sick at home, then my husband, and now the most important thing for me is not to get sick. I can’t even think about how I would sneeze or blow my nose – my sinuses are very sensitive,” she explained. She is currently taking pain relievers and antibiotics and hopes for a smooth recovery without complications.
The case highlights the increasing prevalence of dental implant procedures globally, as individuals seek solutions for tooth loss and related health concerns. The development underscores the importance of preventative dental care and addressing bone density issues.
