Casper Ruud advanced to the round of 16 at the Indian Wells Masters on Monday, defeating Valentin Vacherot 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The victory sets up a potentially challenging quarterfinal matchup against either top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz or Arthur Rinderknech.
The first set saw Vacherot break Ruud’s serve while leading 3-4, ultimately taking the set 3-6. Ruud responded strongly in the second, breaking his opponent when he gained a 4-2 advantage and closing out the set 6-3.
In the decisive third set, Ruud immediately broke Vacherot’s serve and surged to a 2-0 lead. The Norwegian maintained control throughout the remainder of the set, securing the 6-4 win.
Vacherot enjoyed a breakthrough season last year, notably winning the Shanghai Masters as a qualifier and upsetting higher-ranked players like Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune along the way.
Monday’s contest marked the first career meeting between Ruud and Vacherot.
Ruud, the 13th seed in the California tournament, received a bye in the first round. He had a comfortable victory on Saturday against Alexander Shevchenko, winning 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
The Indian Wells competition is an ATP 1000-level event, second in prestige only to the four Grand Slam tournaments. This win keeps Ruud in contention for a significant title and valuable ranking points.
