A key section of the S1 expressway in southern Poland opened to traffic on Monday, March 23, 2026, easing congestion and improving travel times between Bieruń and Oświęcim. The completed 2.9-kilometer segment also functions as a bypass for Bieruń, diverting traffic away from the town center.
The opening marks a significant step in the larger S1 expressway project connecting Mysłowice to Bielsko-Biała, a route spanning nearly 40 kilometers. The entire project is divided into four phases, with the Bieruń-Oświęcim stretch representing a portion of the first phase, which extends from Mysłowice to Oświęcim. The completed section features two lanes in each direction, designed for comfortable and safe travel.
Construction on the broader S1 expressway continues, with the first phase – from Mysłowice to Oświęcim – slated for completion in the latter half of 2026. Details about the project, including specific segments, are available online. The latest roadway is expected to significantly improve regional transportation infrastructure.
The opening of this segment also coincides with the completion of a section of the DK44 bypass around Oświęcim. TVP Kraków reported on the concurrent opening.
Dziennik Zachodni has published photos of the newly completed expressway.
