A significant cloud of Saharan dust stretching across much of Europe is bringing unusual conditions to the Czech Republic, including hazy skies and the potential for “blood rain” – showers tinged with an orange-brown hue – beginning Wednesday.

The dust, which began arriving in the Czech Republic last Tuesday, has already caused hazy conditions and unusually vibrant sunrises, and sunsets. According to a model from the Athens National University, a cold front moving in from the northwest will begin to shift the dust on Wednesday.
“Blood Rain” Expected to Stain Cars
As concentrations of dust increase, showers across the western Czech Republic on Wednesday and then across most of the country overnight into Thursday are expected to produce what is known as “dirty rain” or “blood rain.” This phenomenon occurs when dust particles are washed out of the atmosphere by precipitation.
Once dried, raindrops may leave an orange-brown, yellowish, or even reddish residue on surfaces, such as cars, giving the rain its distinctive name.

Saharan dust events are common in Central Europe, typically occurring several times a year, especially in early spring. Strong winds over North Africa lift fine dust high into the atmosphere, where it can be carried across vast distances by prevailing weather patterns.
