A 26-year-vintage baker was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon, March 11, 2026, in the Vila Íris neighborhood of Santa Luzia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a metropolitan area near Belo Horizonte. Two other individuals, ages 38 and 47, were also wounded in the shooting and are expected to survive. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges of gun violence even in seemingly random attacks.

According to military police, witnesses reported that a white Ford EcoSport passed by on São Bento Street around 4:20 p.m. Occupants of the vehicle then opened fire on people standing outside a residence. Similar vehicles are currently being offered for sale in the area, according to listings on iCarros.

Reports indicate the suspects were searching for a local drug trafficker who resides in the neighborhood. Following the shooting, the individuals exited the vehicle and continued on foot toward the house.

During the attack, a woman believed to be the mother of the intended target was struck by gunfire. Police provided immediate aid and transported her to a medical facility in Santa Luzia before she was transferred to the Metropolitan Hospital Odilon Behrens. A second man, a friend of the target, was also injured and taken by ambulance to João XXIII Hospital.

The baker who died at the scene was not involved in the conflict, police said. He had stopped his bicycle to seek shelter from a heavy downpour at the time of the shooting and was unintentionally caught in the crossfire.

The drug trafficker, who was the apparent target, managed to escape the residence and remains at large. Police stated that he and the injured man are suspects in a homicide that occurred on February 7, 2026.

The victim’s body has been sent to the Medical Legal Institute (IML). The case is under investigation by the 12th Homicide Delegation of Santa Luzia, and authorities continue to search for the perpetrators. The investigation will likely focus on identifying the occupants of the Ford EcoSport and their connection to the intended target.
