Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Passports has clarified the current status of exit and return visas, confirming the service has not been suspended but is now subject to stricter electronic issuance requirements.

The directorate explained that meeting a set of essential regulatory conditions is now a prerequisite for approving any request, noting that incomplete applications or outstanding violations will result in immediate rejection.

The new regulations include several critical requirements:

  • Passport Validity: Must have at least 90 days of validity from the date of issuance.
  • Residency Permit Validity: Must not expire within 90 days.
  • Outstanding Violations: All registered traffic violations must be settled.
  • Fees: Between 60 and 200 Saudi Riyals, depending on the type of visa.
  • Biometric Registration: Mandatory for those over 15 years of age.

Electronic Issuance Process

Visas are issued through the Absher platform, following a specific process that begins with logging onto the platform and selecting the exit and return visa service from the Passports services menu.

The process requires entering data with utmost accuracy, specifying the visa type and duration, before submitting the application for final review.

Common Reasons for Rejection

The Passports Directorate has identified cases that prevent visa issuance, including expired documents, pending traffic violations, and unpaid fees.

Entering incorrect data or having systemic restrictions on the resident’s record will also lead to immediate rejection.

The Directorate advises residents to print a copy of the visa or keep it electronically, and to monitor the expiration date to avoid exceeding the specified period.
