Santa Catarina residents can expect a sunny weekend with a chance of isolated afternoon showers, according to forecasts. The warm weather will give way to cooler temperatures early next week, with potential for frost in higher elevations.

Saturday, January 3rd: The state will experience sunshine and high temperatures, with scattered, brief showers typical of the summer season developing in the afternoon. These showers could be accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, including lightning and a chance of hail, particularly in the western, valley, and northern regions of Santa Catarina. An updated weather advisory is available here.

Winds will be from the northwest to southwest, shifting to a light to moderate south/southeast, with stronger gusts associated with any thunderstorms, especially along the coast.

The current weather pattern is driven by a mass of warm air over Santa Catarina, creating instability as temperatures rise during the afternoon.

Sunday, January 4th: Sunshine will continue across the state, with increasing cloud cover along the coast in the afternoon due to onshore breezes, bringing a chance of rain overnight in the northern coastal areas.

Temperatures will decrease compared to previous days, with lows between 36°F and 41°F (2°C to 5°C) in the higher elevations of the Southern Plateau, and a possibility of light frost. Afternoon highs will be between 77°F and 86°F (25°C to 32°C) statewide.

Winds will be from the south, shifting to a light to moderate southeast.

High pressure systems over Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul are maintaining dry air in Santa Catarina, while the coastal circulation is bringing moisture inland.

Monday, January 5th: The west of Santa Catarina will be mostly sunny, while areas from the plateau to the coast will see more clouds and a chance of rain overnight due to a dry air mass.

Low temperatures are expected in the higher elevations of the Southern Plateau, ranging from 36°F to 41°F (3°C to 5°C), with a chance of light frost. Afternoon highs will be pleasant, reaching 75°F to 79°F (24°C to 27°C) across the state.

Winds will be from the south/southeast, light to moderate, with gusts along the coast.

Tuesday, January 6th: Sunshine with numerous clouds is forecast for all regions of Santa Catarina, with rain expected in the early morning and late evening from Greater Florianópolis northward.

Wednesday, January 7th: Sunshine is expected across Santa Catarina, with rain in the morning from Greater Florianópolis northward. Cloud cover will increase in the afternoon, bringing rain to all regions, with moderate to heavy rainfall from the Extreme West to the South Coast.

Highs will climb to 95°F to 99°F (35°C to 37°C) due to pre-frontal conditions – a cold front advancing along the coast of Rio Grande do Sul. Winds will be from the northeast/north, light to moderate, with gusts associated with thunderstorms.
