An explosion rocked the Schaerbeek municipality Friday evening, with authorities believing a pyrotechnic device was responsible.

A resident alerted authorities around 10:20 p.m. Friday, reporting a loud blast near the Schaerbeek train station. “I heard an explosion near my home around the Schaerbeek station,” the resident reported. Police responding to the scene determined that a pyrotechnic device had likely detonated, according to the Brussels-North police zone, which covers Schaerbeek, Evere and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. Police were called to Albert Giraud Avenue shortly before 10:00 p.m. To investigate reports of the detonation. Police spokesperson Victoire Lorand stated the incident appeared “manifestly” linked to the use of a pyrotechnic device.

A judicial perimeter was established to secure the area and allow for investigation. The federal police laboratory and a fire expert were dispatched to the scene. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion. At this stage, police have declined to provide further comment to avoid jeopardizing the ongoing investigation.
