Schalke 04 Secures Tim Hoogland Through 2029

FC Schalke 04 has announced a three-year contract extension for assistant coach Tim Hoogland, ensuring the 40-year-old remains a key figure in the club’s technical staff until 2029. The move rewards Hoogland for his significant contributions to both the senior squad and the club’s youth development pipeline.

Hoogland, who transitioned to the first-team coaching staff from the U19s in November 2024, serves as a vital bridge between the professional squad and the Knappenschmiede academy. In addition to this liaison role, he is tasked with overseeing the team’s set pieces, a responsibility that has proven invaluable to head coach Miron Muslić.

“I’m really pleased that Tim Hoogland will remain an essential part of our coaching team,” Muslić stated. “We value his work highly—the team benefits enormously from his ideas and the way he goes about things. As a former player and someone who grew up in the area, he has a very good feel for the team, the club and the people here.”

Hoogland’s ascent into the first-team setup follows a steady climb through the coaching ranks. After retiring from professional football in 2020, he began his managerial journey at Schalke in March 2021 as the assistant coach for the U17s before moving up to the U19s in the summer of 2022. His professional development is further bolstered by the UEFA Pro Licence, the highest coaching qualification in European football, which he completed through the Football Association of Wales last year.

“I’m very grateful for the trust the club has shown in me and I’m delighted to continue my journey at Schalke,” Hoogland said. “I really enjoy working with the team and all the staff—together, we set ourselves the goal of stepping things up by a couple of gears. We’ve done that and now we want to keep moving forward together.”

The extension marks a full-circle moment for Hoogland, whose history with the “Royal Blues” spans decades. He first joined the Knappenschmiede as a player in 1998, progressing through the youth system to make his senior debut in February 2005. A versatile defender and midfielder, Hoogland had two primary stints with Schalke, with a period at 1. FSV Mainz 05 from 2007 to 2010 and a loan spell at VfB Stuttgart during the 2012-13 season.

Beyond Gelsenkirchen, Hoogland’s playing career took him across Europe and to Australia, with spells at Fulham F.C. In England, VfL Bochum in Germany, and Melbourne Victory in Australia. His deep familiarity with the club’s culture and his recent tactical certifications make him a cornerstone of Schalke’s long-term vision under Muslić.
