Semana Santa is not a mandatory day of rest for workers according to the Federal Labor Law, but schools will suspend classes.
MEXICO — With just over three weeks until Semana Santa, many people are beginning to plan trips, request time off, or plan family activities. This period is significant not only for its religious meaning but also for its impact on school calendars, work dynamics, and tourism across the country.
According to the official calendar of the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) and the historical criteria of the Christian Church for its liturgical calculation, Semana Santa 2026 will be celebrated from Sunday, March 29th to Sunday, April 5th.
For public and private schools affiliated with the SEP, the break will cover two full weeks.
What is Semana Santa and what does it commemorate?
Semana Santa is a celebration of Christian origin that commemorates the last days of Jesus’ life, from his entry into Jerusalem to his crucifixion and resurrection.
Over time, in addition to its religious significance, it has become a period of social pause.

Millions of people take advantage of it to travel, visit beaches, resorts, or spend time with family.
The most representative days are:
- Holy Thursday: commemorates the Last Supper.
- Good Friday: commemorates the crucifixion.
- Holy Saturday: day of vigil.
- Easter Sunday: celebrates the resurrection.

Why does Semana Santa change dates each year?
Unlike other holidays like Christmas, Semana Santa does not have a fixed date.
Since the Council of Nicaea in 325, it was established that Easter Sunday should be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox, which occurs around March 21st.
Because of this calculation based on the lunar calendar, Semana Santa can fall between late March and late April. This is why it appears on different weeks each year.
