Five men have been arrested in Senegal on suspicion of homosexual activity and related offenses, authorities confirmed Thursday, February 12. The arrests, which took place between the cities of Touba and Mbacké, come amid ongoing debate over LGBTQ+ rights in the West African nation.

The Touba Research Brigade, a unit of the Touba gendarmerie company reporting to the Thiès legion, conducted the operation. According to reports, investigations led officers to arrest A.D., 36, in Touba. Further investigation resulted in the arrest of four additional men in Mbacké, identified as a metalworker (M.L.), a tailor (K.N.), and a merchant (B.D.), along with another individual whose name was not immediately released.

Authorities allege that the suspects confessed to the charges during questioning. Evidence seized during searches included condoms and lubricant. One of the arrested men is reportedly HIV-positive, raising concerns about the potential for intentional transmission of the virus, a charge that has been the subject of recent public discussion in Senegal as highlighted by local media.

The five men are being held in custody and face charges including criminal association, acts against nature, and endangering the lives of others. The Public Prosecutor at the Diourbel Regional Court has been informed of the case. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities indicating that further arrests are possible in the coming days. The case highlights Senegal’s complex legal landscape surrounding same-sex relationships, which remain criminalized in the country.
