Senegal’s president has emphasized the critical role of tourism in bolstering the nation’s economy and fostering sustainable development, calling for increased investment in the sector. The announcement comes as Senegal aims to strengthen its position as a leading travel destination in West Africa.
During a recent cabinet meeting, the president urged officials to accelerate modernization efforts in tourist zones and intensify promotional programs for Senegal as a destination. He specifically highlighted the importance of showcasing the country’s cultural and natural heritage, and supporting the development of world-class hotels and tourism infrastructure nationwide.
Improving the quality of tourism offerings is also a key priority, the president stated, as Senegal seeks to establish a lasting presence in the global tourism market. He also stressed the need for enhanced security measures at tourist sites and a comprehensive inventory of the nation’s classified heritage, including a focus on the historic Île de Gorée.
The president also directed the government to ensure the success of the inaugural West African Arts and Culture Festival (ECOFEST), scheduled to take place in Dakar from November 30 to December 5, 2025. The festival is envisioned as a major event for promoting both the cultural richness and tourism potential of Senegal, and is expected to raise the country’s profile internationally. This event underscores Senegal’s commitment to cultural exchange and economic growth through tourism.
Officials indicated that aligning cultural and tourism policies will be essential to maximizing the benefits of these initiatives. The move highlights the government’s integrated approach to developing a thriving tourism sector.
