Senegalese customs officials visited the village of Doumga Wouro Alpha on Saturday, February 28, 2026, as part of their annual Ramadan outreach program.

The delegation from the General Directorate of Customs (DGD) was received by Thierno Mohamadou Lamine LY, a 95-year-ancient religious leader known for his work in education and spiritual guidance, as well as promoting national unity and traditional values.

LY is considered a leading figure among marabouts in the Fouta region and carries on the legacy of his father, Cheikh Youma Kane LY, of the University of Thilogne. He leads a network of scholars from across the Fouta, including Thierno Samassa of Matam and Thierno Aliou THIAM of Ourossogui, representing various religious families in the Matam and Podor departments.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mouhamed NIANG, head of the Communication and Public Relations Division (DCRP) and leader of the delegation, remarked on LY’s deep understanding of the challenges and importance of customs work.

“Citizens shouldn’t wait for prohibitions or protection from illicit trafficking,” LY explained. “They should protect themselves, as the consequences of using prohibited substances impact their health and well-being.” He added that collaboration with services like Customs, which work to protect against these dangers, is essential. This exchange underscores the importance of community partnerships in combating illegal trade.

LY too emphasized the importance of protecting local industries from unfair competition, stating, “The work of a customs officer is one of the most noble professions, and its importance is undeniable.” He urged all citizens, particularly religious families, to support the Senegalese Customs service.

The meeting was attended by several religious leaders from surrounding areas, invited by LY.

Lieutenant-Colonel NIANG thanked LY on behalf of Babacar MBAYE, the Director General of Customs, praising his civic engagement and expressing the Customs service’s willingness to listen to religious leaders to ensure effective service delivery.

NIANG explained that the administration’s support is intended to assist LY in caring for religious schools and those in need during the month of Ramadan, a time characterized by solidarity and mutual aid.

Brigade chiefs from Ourossogui and Gourel Oumar LY represented the Matam Customs Subdivision and the Northern Regional Directorate at the meeting.
