Severe Storms Put 133 Cities in Santa Catarina on High Alert for 100 km/h Winds

A massive weather system is threatening southern Brazil, placing 133 cities across Santa Catarina under alert as wind gusts are expected to reach 100 km/h. Local authorities warn that these conditions could lead to significant damage across the region.

The Secretaria de Estado da Proteção e Defesa Civil issued a meteorological observation on April 8, warning of southwest and south wind gusts beginning the afternoon of Wednesday, April 8, and continuing through Thursday, April 9. This volatile weather pattern underscores the region’s vulnerability to rapid atmospheric shifts during the autumn season.

In addition to the high winds, residents are bracing for storms that bring a risk of hail. Alerts for these severe conditions are expected to remain in place until Tuesday. While a cold front is beginning to move away from the area, a cyclone is continuing to drive strong winds and create rough sea conditions along the coast.

Heavy precipitation is also a primary concern. Reports from Epagri/Ciram indicate rainfall exceeding 100 mm in the Greater Florianópolis area, portions of the Vale do Itajaí, and the Northern Coast. Such intense rainfall often increases the risk of flash flooding and landslides in the state’s mountainous and coastal terrain.

The combination of a lingering cyclone and extreme rainfall creates a high-risk environment for infrastructure and public safety, requiring constant monitoring by state emergency services.
