Bad Weather Disrupts Operations at Monterrey International Airport

Severe weather conditions in Nuevo León have forced the General Mariano Escobedo International Airport (MTY) to divert flights and report significant delays, complicating travel for passengers on both domestic and international routes.

According to reports from April 9, 2026, the airport faced a combination of light rain and fog banks that severely restricted visibility. Air traffic controllers were forced to divert incoming flights to ensure passenger safety as visibility dropped to two miles and cloud cover descended to just 600 feet. This level of disruption underscores the vulnerability of regional aviation hubs to sudden meteorological shifts in northern Mexico.

Several airlines and specific flights were identified as being affected by the instability. As of 1:40 p.m. On that date, the following disruptions were noted:

  • Magnicharters (Flight GMT 162): Arriving from Cancún, this flight reported delays and adjustments to its arrival schedule.
  • Viva Aerobus (Flight VIV 700): Bound for Orlando, this flight experienced delays starting at 1:00 p.m.
  • Viva Aerobus (Flight VIV 4200): This route to Querétaro was likewise reported as delayed.

Although the Monterrey airport terminal remained operational, officials advised travelers to maintain direct communication with their respective airlines, as flight statuses were changing rapidly due to the volatile weather.

The General Mariano Escobedo International Airport serves as a primary hub for Aeromexico, Magnicharters, and VivaAerobus, and is recognized as the busiest airport in northern Mexico. Given its role as a critical transit point for routes to Mexico City, Houston, and Cancun, weather-related diversions can have a ripple effect on regional travel schedules.
