Unexpectedly Strong Storms Hit Slovakia; Over 1,000 Lightning Strikes Recorded

Over 1,000 lightning strikes have been recorded across Slovakia on April 5, 2026, as a series of powerful and unexpected thunderstorms sweep through the region.

The weather system initially brought severe thunderstorms to western Slovakia, where early activity was documented in photographs. The system has since intensified, prompting the issuance of a first warning as the storms gain strength.

Storm cells have continued to develop and shift across the country, with additional activity reported near Trenčín, Žilina, and Nitra. According to meteorological reports, the risk of further storm activity is expected to persist throughout the night.

The system is currently moving through the Podunajská nížina (Danubian Lowland). Even as initial counts placed the electrical activity at 700 strikes, the number has since climbed, with over 1,000 lightning strikes now recorded.

This sudden surge in electrical activity and the unexpected intensity of the system underscore the volatility of current weather patterns in the region.
