GURGL – Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States dominated the first run of the World Cup slalom race in Gurgl, Austria, on Sunday.

The 30-year-old American posted a blistering time, finishing 31 hundredths of a second ahead of Albania’s Lara Colturi.

Switzerland’s Camille Rast and Wendy Holdener trailed Shiffrin by 48 hundredths of a second, while Germany’s Lena Dürr was .75 seconds off the pace.

Other competitors fell more than a second behind Shiffrin’s leading time.

Shiffrin is in a strong position to defend her victory from the opening slalom event of the season in Levi, Finland, and repeat her success in Gurgl from the previous year. This World Cup stop is a key early-season indicator for the contenders in the slalom discipline.

The second run is scheduled to begin at 13:30 local time. Slovakia did not have any athletes competing in the race, as Petra Vlhová only resumed on-snow training last month following a lengthy recovery period.
