Escalating tensions in the Middle East have led to a surge in maritime incidents and rising global energy prices, as conflict between Israel and Iran expands. The situation is further complicated by attacks on vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, raising concerns about wider regional instability.

Israel has conducted new attacks on the southern outskirts of Beirut, Lebanon, targeting what the Israeli military describes as the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, according to reports from the Dutch publication PZC. These strikes come as part of a broader conflict that began with an attack by Israel and the United States on Iran.

Israel claims to have destroyed a significant portion of Iran’s air defenses, as reported by Reformatorisch Dagblad. Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard asserts it has attacked an American oil tanker in the northern part of the Persian Gulf.

The conflict is impacting global shipping lanes. Several Dutch vessels are reportedly in vulnerable positions in the Persian Gulf, according to NOS. Three ships have been hit in the Strait of Hormuz, and Thai crew members are missing following a fire.

The price of oil has risen sharply following attacks on oil tankers off the coast of Iraq, with a fleet of supertankers now heading towards the Red Sea, as reported by Het Financieele Dagblad.

On March 5, 2026, reports indicated that fighting between Israel and Iran had entered its first week, costing the United States more than $11 billion, according to VRT. Israeli officials have advised residents of southern neighborhoods in Beirut to evacuate.

The European Union and Gulf states have condemned the attacks on Iran, calling for a cessation of hostilities. Iran, in turn, has accused Israel and the United States of targeting civilian infrastructure. Reformatorisch Dagblad also reported that Iran claims to have launched over 500 rockets since the start of the conflict with the US and Israel.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing developments reported across the region. Trouw reports that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has claimed to have carried out a 37th wave of attacks against Israel and American targets in the Middle East, utilizing what they describe as “super-heavy rockets.”
