Sister Act in Plzeň: A Breathtaking Musical Hit

A beloved 90s comedy has found new life on stage, captivating audiences with its heartwarming story and infectious energy. The musical adaptation of the film, which centers on a lounge singer who witnesses a murder and finds refuge in a convent, has been a global success for two decades.

Notably, the stage version features an entirely new score from Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken, who has earned 11 Grammy Awards and 8 Oscars for his work on films like *The Little Mermaid*, *Beauty and the Beast*, and *Aladdin* [1]. Rather than using songs from the original movie, Menken crafted original compositions inspired by the vibrant sounds of 1970s disco, soul, and gospel music.

The production first premiered in the Czech Republic nine years ago in Prague, and the Plzeň staging marks the second in the country. Critics are praising the new production, noting its successful reimagining of the source material.

The Plzeň production distinguishes itself by creatively reinterpreting the original script, including new lyrics penned by Pavel Bár and Lumír Olšovský. The lyrics are described as natural and fresh, fitting seamlessly with the rhythm of the songs and incorporating clever wordplay that delights audiences.

Visually, the production is a triumph, seamlessly blending all elements of stagecraft. Andrea Pavlovičová’s costumes playfully evoke the fashion of the late 1970s, while Ondřej Brýna’s inventive set design creates a dynamic and engaging environment.

Director Lumír Olšovský once again demonstrates his skill with musical theatre, skillfully navigating the challenges of adapting the story. The direction also cleverly and subtly involves the audience at times.

Denisa Komarov Kubášová’s choreography also shines. Like her work on *Oliver!*, the Plzeň production of *Sister Act* is full of thoughtfully executed movement.

The 18-piece orchestra and chorus are equally impressive, with the company of performers, led by Vojtěch Adamčík, delivering a truly joyful performance. The score provides the chorus with opportunities to both vocally impress and entertain the audience, particularly in scenes where the nuns are “learning” to sing. If one word could describe the chorus’s performance, it would be joy.

Charlotte Režná, a prominent member of the Plzeň ensemble, shone in the lead role of Deloris. Her casting is well-deserved, and her performance meets the highest standards in both acting and singing.

This role marks another significant achievement for Režná, following her acclaimed performances in *Rebecca* and *Jesus Christ Superstar*. It will be interesting to spot how her alternate, Eva Staškovičová, fares in subsequent performances.

Stanislava Topinková Fořtová delivered a compelling performance as the stern Mother Superior, a role that suits her well. Marek Holý as the gangster Curtis and Roman Krebs also gave strong performances.

The Plzeň musical scene has added another surefire hit to its repertoire, well worth the journey from anywhere in the country. If you’re looking for a fun, heartwarming story about community, friendship, and hope, this is the show for you.
