Sleep Problems: Women More Affected Than Men – New Data

Worldwide, sleep disturbances are becoming increasingly common. New data from Statista research reveals a significant portion of the population struggles with sleep. In 25 of the 32 countries surveyed, more than one-third of respondents reported experiencing a sleep disorder in the past year.

The study asked participants if they had experienced a sleep disorder in the twelve months prior to the survey. The results show a notable pattern: in all countries examined, women report sleep problems more frequently than men. This disparity highlights a critical public health issue, as adequate sleep is essential for overall well-being.

The difference is particularly pronounced in some nations. In Sweden, the country with the highest reported sleep problems in the survey, 56 percent of women reported experiencing symptoms of a sleep disorder in the past year, compared to 45 percent of men.

According to the Sleep Foundation, women are indeed more susceptible to insomnia. A key biological factor is hormones. Hormonal fluctuations can influence sleep rhythms and sleep quality. During various life stages, such as the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause, hormone levels change, which can lead to sleep problems or disrupted sleep.

Beyond these biological factors, social and cultural circumstances also play a role. Researchers refer to these as gender-related differences. Women in many societies, for example, more often experience a double burden of function and caregiving responsibilities, which can cause stress and negatively impact sleep. Mental strain, such as worrying or emotional stress, is also more frequently reported by women and can contribute to insomnia.
