Slovak music is mourning the sudden loss of René Michálek, a celebrated drummer and member of the folk band Pruclek, who passed away at the age of 53. The news has resonated throughout the Slovak music scene, highlighting the impact Michálek had on the genre.
Members of Pruclek announced Michálek’s death on social media on Sunday, according to reports. The band shared the news with their fans, expressing their grief over the unexpected passing of their colleague.
In a separate, but equally somber announcement, Slovak folk music also lost Titus Pilný, a former bandleader of Vajnoranka, composer, and educator, who died on June 3, 2025, at the age of 92. Pilný’s legacy extends across generations of musicians, and his influence on Slovak cultural life was significant.
“Friends, these lines are not effortless to write. On June 3, 2025, we lost the legendary bandleader of Vajnoranka, a composer and teacher who left a significant mark on the cultural life of Vajnor. With his art, he spread the good name of brass band music throughout Slovakia and beyond,” the band wrote on Facebook.
Pilný mentored numerous generations of musicians and was considered the heart and driving force behind Vajnoranka. Under his leadership, the ensemble successfully represented Slovakia at prestigious international events in Graz, Austria; Alviano, Italy; and Regensburg, Germany.
A highlight of his career was a performance by Vajnoranka in Italy, which included an audience with Pope John Paul II in 1997. “This experience, which took place during a week-long stay, remains one of the strongest memories in the history of the group,” according to Slovak news site bratislava.zoznam.sk.
In 1998, Pilný also spearheaded the creation of the first multimedia CD featuring brass band music in Slovakia. The CD included songs from the regions of Western Slovakia, Moravia, and South Bohemia and was considered a unique achievement in its genre.
A farewell ceremony for the musician will be held on Monday, June 9, at 2 p.m. At the parish church in Vajnory.
