Slovakia has halted emergency electricity deliveries to Ukraine, according to a statement from Prime Minister Robert Fico. The move comes as tensions rise over energy supplies between the two countries, and underscores the interconnectedness of European energy security.

Fico announced the suspension on February 23, 2026, stating that the decision was made due to the lack of resumed Russian oil shipments to Slovakia. “We will stop supplying electric energy eastward,” he said, adding that any request for assistance in stabilizing Ukraine’s power grid would be denied.

The reciprocal measure is expected to be lifted immediately once Ukraine restores oil deliveries to Slovakia, or further “sanctions” will be considered. Fico asserted that this action does not violate any international obligations.

According to data from the analytical platform ExPro Electricity, Slovakia supplied approximately 21 percent of Ukraine’s total electricity imports last year. Hungary was a larger supplier, providing 42 percent in 2025, and as much as 50 percent in February of this year.

Elsewhere in Slovakia, authorities are warning residents of potential black ice conditions across the country.
