The Social Security Administration (SSA) is sending out its final round of monthly payments this year on March 25. Millions of Americans rely on these payments, which include benefits for retired workers, survivors, and those receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Still, only a specific group of beneficiaries will receive their payment on Wednesday.
Several rounds of payments for March have already been distributed, based on recipients’ birthdates. Those receiving SSI benefits received their payments early, on February 27, due to the March 1st falling on a Sunday. Payments were also sent on March 3rd to those who began receiving benefits before May 1997.
Beneficiaries with birthdates between the 1st and 10th of the month received payments on March 11th, and those born between the 11th and 20th received their checks on March 18th.
The final payment distribution this month, scheduled for March 25, will go to those with birthdates between the 21st and 31st of the month.
How Social Security Payments Are Distributed Each Month
SSI payments are consistently sent on the first day of each month. Beneficiaries who began receiving payments before May 1997 receive their funds on the third day of the month.
Those who receive both SSI and Social Security benefits – including retirement, survivor, or SSDI – will receive their SSI payment on the 1st and their Social Security payment on the 3rd.
Remaining Social Security checks (retirement, survivor, and SSDI) are distributed from the second to the fourth Wednesday of each month, determined by the beneficiary’s date of birth:
- Second Wednesday of the month: beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of the month
- Third Wednesday of the month: beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th
- Fourth Wednesday of the month: beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st
If a payment date falls on a federal holiday or weekend, the payment is typically advanced to the first business day prior.
Social Security Payment Methods
Currently, Social Security payments are primarily delivered electronically through direct deposit and the Direct Express Debit Card. Paper checks, previously an option, were discontinued by the SSA in September of last year.
Beneficiaries who previously received payments by mail must update their payment method to continue receiving their benefits each month.
