A passenger plane making a regular scheduled flight veered off the runway during an emergency landing in Somalia and came to rest in the waters of the Indian Ocean. There were no casualties, according to the Associated Press.
The aircraft, operated by Somali airline Starsky Aviation, was forced to return to the international airport in the capital, Mogadishu, approximately 15 minutes after takeoff for the northern city of Galkayo, due to a technical issue.
The runway proved insufficient for the aircraft to stop, and it ended up in shallow waters of the Indian Ocean near a beach, the airline reported.
Somali Transport Minister Mohamed Farah Nuuh stated that the plane sustained damage, but all 55 people on board – 50 passengers and a five-member crew – were unharmed.
He pledged that the cause of the incident would be thoroughly investigated.
A spokesperson for Starsky Aviation praised the pilot’s actions, according to the BBC.
The technical problem affecting the Fokker 50 aircraft remains unknown at this time.
This incident comes after a similar event in late October, where two employees at Hong Kong International Airport died after a Dubai-bound Emirates cargo plane veered off the runway during landing and split in two in the sea. The four crew members survived, and authorities launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, which was described as one of the most serious in the city’s aviation history.
