CNews Journalist Sonia Mabrouk Resigns Following Controversy
Sonia Mabrouk, a prominent journalist at CNews, announced her resignation on Friday, February 6, citing concerns over the network’s decision to retain Jean-Marc Morandini despite his prior convictions. The move marks a significant moment for the French news channel, as Mabrouk was one of its leading figures.
Mabrouk communicated her decision to Agence France-Presse, stating she had observed a “certain and effective alteration” in her relationship with a portion of CNews’s leadership since voicing her disapproval of Morandini’s continued employment. “Yesterday, today and tomorrow, my compass will remain the preservation of the interest of the victims,” she added in a statement.
The journalist had publicly distanced herself from the situation on January 20, when, during a live interview with Socialist deputy Jérôme Guedj, she explained that her “respect” for the network’s management did not equate to “endorsing” Morandini’s continued presence on air. “I admit I haven’t slept in several days,” Mabrouk said at the time, referencing her role hosting “La Grande Interview” and “Midi News” on CNews, as well as co-hosting on Europe 1.
According to reports, Mabrouk expressed her “particular affection” for CNews and its staff, thanking viewers for their “unwavering loyalty.” She will remain on air during her one-month notice period.
Mabrouk joined Europe 1 in 2013 and CNews in 2017. Her departure comes amid growing scrutiny of Morandini’s position at the network following his conviction for corruption of minors. The situation highlights the increasing pressure on media organizations to address ethical concerns and maintain public trust. Franceinfo details the timeline of events leading to Mabrouk’s resignation.
Deputy Jérôme Guedj, a candidate in the presidential election, described Mabrouk’s decision as “courageous and elegant,” according to BFM. The controversy has unfolded over the course of three weeks, placing CNews under considerable pressure, as noted by Le Figaro.
