Sony Interactive Entertainment Acquires Cinemersive Labs to Advance AI-Driven Visuals

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), the organization behind the PlayStation brand, announced on April 2, 2026, that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Cinemersive Labs. The UK-based startup specializes in machine learning and computer vision, and the acquisition is designed to push the boundaries of visual computing to create more immersive gameplay experiences.

Founded in 2022, Cinemersive Labs has developed a specialized toolkit capable of converting 2D photographs and videos into 3D volumes. This technology is most prominently featured in their virtual reality application, Parallax, which serves as a viewer for parallax photos. These three-dimensional images, which allow users to peer around objects with natural head movements, can be captured using professional stereo-lens cameras or standard smartphones.

Following the acquisition, the Cinemersive Labs team will be integrated into SIE’s Visual Computing Group (VCG). This research engineering division focuses on the evolution of graphical technology, including generative AI models, video coding, and game rendering. By incorporating Cinemersive’s expertise, Sony aims to apply machine learning to refine rendering techniques, enhance gameplay visuals, and achieve higher levels of visual fidelity for players.

This move signals a deeper commitment to AI-driven performance as Sony continues to optimize its hardware. Machine learning has already played a pivotal role in the PlayStation 5 Pro, which utilizes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)—a custom AI upscaling technology that allows the console to run games at lower resolutions before upscaling them to 4K. Sony recently released an updated version of PSSR in March 2026 to further boost performance.

The acquisition also aligns with Sony’s broader strategic collaborations, such as Project Amethyst. This multi-pronged partnership with AMD is focused on improving upscaling and ray tracing for future console hardware. By bringing Cinemersive Labs into the fold, Sony is strengthening its internal capacity to innovate within the rapidly evolving intersection of AI and real-time graphics.
