Sony May Abandon PC Releases for Single-Player Games

Sony may be reconsidering its strategy of bringing PlayStation exclusives to PC, potentially scaling back releases of its single-player titles on platforms outside of the PlayStation 5 console. According to recent reports, the company appears to be shifting its focus towards live service games for PC.

“I feel their strategy is to release live service games for PC. But I acquire the sense that they are backing away from releasing on PC their big console games, like the single-player ones,” a source stated. When asked if Sony could potentially “close the door” to future PC releases, the source pointed to Marvel’s Wolverine, scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on September 15. “I wouldn’t be surprised if this game never comes to PC. But even if it does, you have a pretty clear indication that you’re going to need a PlayStation 5 to play it in the foreseeable future,” they added.

The shift away from PC releases of single-player games wouldn’t necessarily be a significant setback for Sony, according to the source. “I don’t think it’s been massively successful to begin with. So I don’t know, it doesn’t seem like it would be a huge blow. It’s very likely they’re just putting the genie back in the bottle,” they explained.

Whether Sony ultimately scales back its PC releases remains to be seen. The company is currently preparing Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Kena: Scars of Kosmora for release on PC. This potential change in strategy comes as game developers increasingly weigh the benefits of platform exclusivity against the wider reach offered by PC gaming.
