In a move reflecting his unconventional approach to corporate governance, Elon Musk has reportedly required the financial institutions and advisory firms participating in the SpaceX initial public offering (IPO) to subscribe to his AI chatbot, Grok. This unusual condition adds a layer of strategic integration between Musk’s aerospace ambitions and his artificial intelligence ventures.

According to a report by the New York Times published on April 3, 2026, the mandate extends to the various banks, law firms, accounting firms, and consultants involved in the IPO process. Sources indicate that Musk has strongly pressured these entities to purchase Grok subscriptions, with some banks even being asked to run advertisements on the social media platform X. This strategy appears designed to bolster the adoption of the AI tool among elite financial circles.

The response from the financial sector has been substantial. Some institutions have reportedly committed tens of millions of dollars toward Grok subscriptions, while others have agreed to integrate the AI’s capabilities directly into their internal IT systems. This integration underscores the growing influence of generative AI within corporate infrastructure.

Grok, which was developed by xAI and is now operated by SpaceX following a merger and acquisition, currently occupies the fourth position in the global AI chatbot market. It trails behind industry leaders OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini.
