Spain Weather: DANA Storm to Bring Snow, Rain & Waves Until Wednesday

Spain is bracing for another week of unsettled weather as a new weather system, a DANA (isolated depression at high levels), is expected to bring widespread rainfall and cooler temperatures across much of the country. The arrival of this system follows recent heavy rains from Storm Regina, continuing a period of instability for the Iberian Peninsula.

Seven autonomous communities are under yellow alerts for snow, rain, and rough seas starting Monday, March 9, 2026. Asturias, Castilla y León (Ávila, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia and Zamora) and Madrid are facing snow warnings, with accumulations potentially reaching five to ten centimeters within 24 hours.

The Balearic Islands (Mallorca and Menorca) and Catalonia (Girona) are also under alert for rainfall, where up to 20 liters per square meter could fall in a single hour. Galicia (A Coruña and Pontevedra) and the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and Tenerife) are on yellow alert due to strong waves.

The DANA is forecast to bring cloudy or overcast skies to the western part of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with widespread precipitation. Rainfall will be more scattered along the southeastern coast. The northwestern quadrant of the peninsula is expected to spot the most intense and persistent rainfall, with localized strong thunderstorms and hail possible in northern parts of the Balearic Islands and northeastern Catalonia.

Snow Expected in March

Snowfall is anticipated in the mountains of northern Spain on Monday, with a snow line between 1,300 and 1,500 meters, dropping to 800-1,200 meters in the western regions. The Cantabrian Mountains and the Central System are expected to see the highest accumulations. In the Canary Islands, northern slopes of the mountainous islands will experience cloudy skies with light precipitation, while other areas will be partly cloudy.

Patches of fog are also possible in mountainous areas, eastern parts of the Southern Meseta, the Balearic Islands, and along the Mediterranean coast. Brumes and fog banks may also form as the front passes.

Maximum temperatures are expected to fall in the western and northwestern parts of the country, with a noticeable drop in inland Galicia and western Cantabria. Conversely, temperatures will rise in the Mediterranean arc, while little change is expected elsewhere.

Minimum temperatures are predicted to decrease slightly with no significant changes in the archipelagos. Weak frosts are possible in the peaks of major mountain ranges, and potentially in surrounding areas.

Westerly and southerly winds will prevail, generally light but intensifying with moderate intervals in the western Meseta. Winds will be stronger along the coasts, moderate on the southern and northern peninsular coasts, and shifting to a northerly component with strong gusts in Galicia. In the Canary Islands, trade winds will blow with strong intervals and potential very strong gusts in exposed areas.

Thursday, three days after the DANA’s arrival, is expected to be the calmest day of the week, marking a transition between the unsettled weather and a possible new trough.
