Spanish cinema is a favorite among Puerto Rican audiences. Whether it’s the shared language, relatable stories, or simply a good time at the movies, films from Spain consistently find strong support on the island.
That enthusiasm is on display with the celebration of the Semana del Cine Español en Puerto Rico, which will mark its eighth anniversary from April 9 to April 15, 2026 at Fine Arts Cinema Café in Hato Rey. The festival, produced and programmed by Wiesner Distribution, will feature seven exclusive premieres, including recently award-winning titles like the feature film “Los domingos,” which took home five Goya Awards, including Best Film, and “Sorda,” honored with three Goya Awards, including Best New Director (Eva Libertad).
“This year we are also betting on co-productions with Latin America as a natural bridge between both continents. For example, in this edition we highlight ‘Mistura,’ a Peruvian co-production starring Bárbara Mori that celebrates the cultural and gastronomic richness of Peru from a contemporary perspective,” explained Cynthia Wiesner, president of Wiesner Distribution, in an official statement. “We will also be screening the hilarious film “Homo Sapiens?”, an anthology comedy directed by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, starring Guillermo Francella, who plays 16 characters.”
Since its inception in 2016, the Semana del Cine Español has established itself as a solid platform for cultural exchange between Spain and Puerto Rico, bringing audiences productions that stand out for their artistic quality, thematic diversity, and narrative strength. The event has the collaboration of the Consulate General of Spain in Puerto Rico and local cultural allies, including the Spanish beer Alhambra.
