Elon Musk’s SpaceX has significantly extended its lead in the satellite race, surpassing a key milestone with over 10,000 satellites in orbit. This achievement underscores the growing dominance of private companies in shaping space-based infrastructure, a sector increasingly vital for global communications and data transmission.
According to data from Look Up, a French startup specializing in space surveillance, Starlink reached 10,003 satellites as of March 13, following a launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. This figure dramatically outpaces its primary European competitor, Eutelsat’s OneWeb constellation, which currently operates 651 satellites.
Amazon Trails Behind
Jeff Bezos’s Amazon is a distant third, with its Project Kuiper constellation comprising 210 satellites. Chinese firms Guo Wang and Qian Fan have deployed 154 and 108 satellites, respectively.
“The crossing of the 10,000 active satellites threshold by Starlink shows that a private actor can now structure a large part of the activity in low Earth orbit on its own,” said Michel Friedling, a former French space commander and co-founder of Look Up. He added that these commercial megaconstellations play a “central role” in the economic and strategic balance, and the ability to monitor activity in orbit is “a major issue of sovereignty.”
The data is based on information processed by Synapse, Look Up’s platform for tracking and analyzing space traffic. Synapse aggregates public and proprietary orbital data, launch announcements from Starlink, and Look Up’s own observations, filtering out inactive satellites. The company is currently deploying a global network of radars to monitor space traffic.
The rapid expansion of Starlink highlights the increasing commercialization of space and the potential for a few key players to control access to this critical infrastructure. This development is likely to fuel further debate about the regulation of satellite constellations and the need for international cooperation to ensure the sustainable use of space.
