Storm Therese’s Impacts Are Being Felt Across the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are grappling with the full force of Storm Therese, as accumulated rainfall in areas of Gran Canaria, La Palma and Tenerife approaches and exceeds 300 liters per square meter. The severe weather has caused barrancos – steep ravines – to flow with water not seen in decades, localized flooding in low-lying areas, wind gusts surpassing 120 kilometers per hour (75 mph), and waves crashing over coastal avenues. Fallen trees and rockslides blocking roads are also being reported. The storm is a significant event for the islands, potentially disrupting travel and daily life.
The storm is expected to continue through Sunday, with the Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET, maintaining active warnings for wind, rain, thunderstorms, and coastal phenomena.
