Unknown Worlds Entertainment has unveiled a new development diary for Subnautica 2, the highly anticipated open-world survival crafting (OWSC) game. The latest update focuses on a completely redesigned base-building system, showcasing a significant leap forward in technology and design philosophy compared to its predecessors.

The video features core team members, including base design lead Kiel McDonald and engineer Carolyn Lu, sharing insights into the creative process and technical challenges encountered during development. This new system arrives as the underwater survival genre continues to gain traction with players seeking immersive and creative experiences.

Unlike Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, which utilized a pre-fabricated structure-based approach, Subnautica 2 introduces a “real-time modular architecture” system. This new design allows for more flexible expansion of external structures and customization of windows and passageways, as well as detailed management of smaller elements to create personalized interior spaces.

The team explained that bases will evolve beyond simple shelters to become beautiful habitats and strategically important exploration hubs. The development team similarly demonstrated in-game footage of multiplayer functionality, showcasing players collaborating to build a detailed and unique underwater base, highlighting the unique enjoyment of cooperative construction.

“Base building is a core pillar of the Subnautica series,” stated design lead Anthony Gallegos. “In Subnautica 2, we want to further empower player expression and move towards a more ‘sculptural’ building system, offering flexibility far beyond what we’ve done before. One can’t wait to see what players create and how they push the system to its limits – and beyond.”

Subnautica 2 is a direct sequel to Subnautica, the pioneering title that established the underwater survival genre. The game will take players to a new alien world, leaving behind the familiar planet 4546B, and will leverage the visual fidelity of Unreal Engine 5. For the first time in the series, the game will also include an optional four-player co-op mode, allowing players to strategize and survive together with friends.

Subnautica 2 is scheduled to launch in early access on PC and Xbox Series consoles in 2026. The development team plans to continue revealing core features, including cooperative gameplay, new ecosystems, and modular vehicles, through a series of ongoing development diaries. Players can follow KRAFTON’s official social media channels, the official website, or the official Discord server for the latest updates.
