Sweden’s food tax will be cut in half, from 12 percent to 6 percent, starting April 1, 2026, and lasting until December 31, 2027. Several major grocery chains have already announced plans to pass the savings on to consumers.
Coop is among the retailers moving quickly to reflect the change, initiating price reductions as early as Monday, March 30, 2026. The company stated its intention to ease consumer planning for Easter holiday shopping and to allow stores sufficient time to implement the necessary price adjustments.
“We want to make it easier for consumers to plan their weekly shopping, especially ahead of Easter,” said Anders Torell, CEO of Coop Sverige. The company likewise expressed hope that the reduced tax rate will be extended beyond the initial 2027 deadline. This move comes as Swedish households continue to navigate inflationary pressures and seek affordability in everyday goods.
