Carnival celebrations across Switzerland and France are proceeding with heightened security measures following a recent tragedy in Crans-Montana. The increased vigilance comes as communities prepare for large gatherings during the festive period.
The Carnival of Monthey, set to begin Thursday, is among those implementing stricter security protocols. Officials have identified key areas requiring extra attention, including parade routes, fairgrounds, and a large dining hall capable of hosting 4,000 people, according to reports.
Loïc Manigley, the security chief for the Carnival of Monthey, explained that these “hot spots” necessitate a focused approach to safety. “There’s the parade, which attracts several thousand people, the fairground area where all the rides are, and above all the Triboulet space, which houses a large canteen that can accommodate 4000 people,” he said, as reported by RTS. “That’s the area we’re working on the most.”
Glenn Martignier, head of security for the city of Monthey, stated that while the incident in Crans-Montana has impacted his team’s mindset, the overall security organization remains unchanged. “We have always been very strict and very severe, with the carnival committee among others, to ensure that all security is guaranteed during this event,” he promised.
Security is also a major concern for bars throughout the region. One establishment in Monthey, Le Cheval Blanc, has decided to remain closed for Carnival due to building deficiencies and safety concerns, 24 Heures reported. The bar had previously only opened during Carnival celebrations.
Elsewhere, communities are taking similar precautions. In Gravelines, France, the Crans-Montana disaster is weighing heavily on safety preparations for local Carnival events, according to radio6.fr. Extinguishers, fire department presence, and precise measurements are becoming standard practice as safety takes center stage.
The increased security measures reflect a broader trend of prioritizing safety at large public events following recent incidents. The Carnival of Monthey, a six-day festival transforming the city with masks, floats, and music, is determined to proceed while ensuring the well-being of attendees, as detailed on the Carnival de Monthey website.
