Rising star Sydney Sweeney appears to have found a box office formula with the erotic thriller *the Housemaid*,which is swiftly approaching $150 million worldwide just three weeks into its release. The film marks a potential turning point for Sweeney, whose previous projects – including *Americana*, *Eden*, and *Christy* – did not achieve comparable commercial success [[2]]. Based on a popular novel and directed by Paul Feig, *The Housemaid* is already exceeding expectations and quickly climbing the ranks of top-performing thrillers.

Sydney Sweeney’s latest film, *The Housemaid*, is proving to be a major box office success, nearing the $150 million mark after approximately 20 days in theaters worldwide. The film’s performance signals a significant turning point for the actress, who hasn’t consistently seen blockbuster results in recent years.

The erotic thriller is currently on track to reach $200 million globally, which would make it Sweeney’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing 2023’s *Anyone But You*. The success is particularly notable given Sweeney’s previous films hadn’t achieved similar financial heights.

Directed by Paul Feig, known primarily for his comedies, *The Housemaid* is based on the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden. The film has already made its mark on box office history, entering the top 100 highest-grossing thriller films of all time this week.

During its run, *The Housemaid* has outperformed critically acclaimed thrillers like Kathryn Bigelow’s *Zero Dark Thirty*, Steven Spielberg’s *Munich*, and Tony Scott’s *Man on Fire*. It has also surpassed Gerard Butler’s *Angel Has Fallen* and Liam Neeson’s *Unknown* in worldwide gross revenue.

Currently, *The Housemaid* ranks as the 98th highest-grossing thriller film globally. To break into the top 50, it needs to exceed the $212 million earned by 2009’s *District 9*. Reaching the $200 million milestone would also see it surpass the 1990 thriller classic, *The Hunt for Red October*.

The film’s success has already greenlit a sequel. Sweeney is set to reprise her role and will also serve as an executive producer on the project. Paul Feig will return to direct the follow-up, which will be based on the second book in McFadden’s trilogy, with Rebecca Sonnenshine returning to write the screenplay.

*The Housemaid* opened in Turkey on January 9th.
