A Hungarian deputy mayor has resigned after allegations surfaced that he assaulted a woman at a local festival. The incident, which occurred at a sausage-making festival in Szentmártonkáta, has prompted a police investigation and sparked public debate.
Police responded to a reported altercation on March 1, after a 55-year-old man allegedly struck a 27-year-old woman during an event secured by law enforcement. “Yesterday, at an event in Szentmártonkáta – which was secured by the police – a 55-year-old man had a verbal dispute with a 27-year-old local woman. According to the woman, the dispute escalated into a physical assault, and the man hit her once. Paramedics treated the woman’s injuries at the scene,” police stated.
Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the man, but his initials match those of Bodor András, the former deputy mayor of Szentmártonkáta, who recently announced his resignation. Police detained the man, identified as B. András, but were unable to question him as a suspect until March 1 due to his level of intoxication. He is being investigated on suspicion of attempted aggravated assault.
The woman’s husband was also briefly detained as a witness. “In addition to him, the injured woman’s husband was detained by the Nagykáta police, and he was questioned as a witness in the case on March 1. The Nagykáta Police Department is investigating the further circumstances of the case with the involvement of experts,” authorities said.
Bodor András previously announced his resignation following the allegations. He has denied any wrongdoing, calling the accusations “unfounded and false.”
The woman, identified as Bordás-Pauza Gréta, detailed the alleged assault in a Facebook post that quickly went viral. She claimed that Bodor András “beat me to a pulp” at the kolbásztöltő (sausage-stuffing) festival. In her post, she also alleged a previous inappropriate advance from the deputy mayor, claiming he offered her a position within the municipal office in exchange for sexual favors. She stated that the altercation occurred after she expressed her disapproval.
“Yesterday evening’s events have placed me at the center of serious accusations. These accusations are unfounded and false,” Bodor András shared on Facebook through the Szentmártonkáta municipality’s page (the post is no longer available on Bodor’s page). The case highlights the increasing scrutiny faced by public officials and the potential consequences of alleged misconduct.
