Taoyuan, Taiwan – Plans are moving forward for a new light rail line in Taoyuan City, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between key areas. The Taoyuan Metropolitan Area’s “Silver Line,” likewise known as the Changging Line, is slated to connect Linkou, Taoyuan City, and the Taoyuan Train Station.
The approximately 17-kilometer line will feature 20 stations and a depot, according to officials. The route will run from Chang Gung University, along Cultural Road, through Turtle Mountain, and ultimately to the Taoyuan Train Station. The project is intended to strengthen transportation links between Taoyuan and New Taipei City.
The Taoyuan City Government’s Department of Transportation announced three public briefings were held from February 9 to February 11 to present the Silver Line’s planning progress and gather feedback from residents. The briefings took place at the Lugang Citizen Activity Center in Turtle Mountain, the Dongshou Citizen Activity Center in Taoyuan, and the Gongxi Citizen Activity Center in Turtle Mountain.
The Silver Line is expected to alleviate traffic between Taoyuan City and Turtle Mountain, and to reduce commuter demand on transportation to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Future integration with existing MRT lines – including the Airport Line, Green Line, Brown Line, and planned Blue and Orange lines – as well as Taiwan Railways Administration lines, is also envisioned.
The project received preliminary approval from Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation in May 2022, with the Changging Line identified as a priority route for early development. A feasibility study for the line has been completed and submitted for review, according to reports. The move underscores the city’s commitment to expanding its rail network.
