New “Tatort” Episode Tackles Harrowing High-Rise Fire
A new installment of the long-running German crime drama “Tatort” premiered on March 22nd, delving into the aftermath of a devastating high-rise fire. The episode, titled “Fackel” (Torch), centers around a case with 13 fatalities that bears striking similarities to the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire in London, where 72 people lost their lives. The fictional case unfolds as investigators Hamza Kulina and Maryam Azadi examine a fire disaster that occurred five years prior in a social housing complex in Frankfurt.
The premiere, broadcast on das Erste, has sparked discussion about fire safety standards in high-rise buildings. According to reports, the storyline prompted concerns that the public might perceive such buildings as unsafe. However, experts from the German Institute for Fire Protection (DIvB) and ABG Frankfurt Holding have moved to reassure residents, stating that Germany has “strict legal and technical requirements” for high-rise construction.
Axel Haas, Geschäftsführer of the DIvB, explained that the “Model High-Rise Directive ensures that high safety standards apply, especially for these challenging building types.” These standards encompass everything from fire escape routes and stairwells to alarm and extinguishing systems. The requirements for fire resistance also increase with building height, along with detailed regulations for smoke extraction, water supply, elevators, and lightning protection.
The series’ depiction of a high-rise fire echoes the Grenfell Tower tragedy, but officials note that the United Kingdom had less stringent regulations in place at the time of the 2017 disaster. The “Tatort” episode follows investigators as they revisit a fire that occurred in Frankfurt, and the case has brought renewed attention to the importance of building safety. The city of Frankfurt itself has a significant number of buildings that fall into the high-rise category, defined as being taller than 22 meters.
The new episode features Edin Hasanovic as Hamza Kulina and Melika Foroutan as Maryam Azadi. The storyline explores the impact of the tragedy on those affected, including Almila Adak, who lost her mother in the fire, and her intense feelings toward entrepreneur Steffen Böttcher. The drama also delves into the personal life of investigator Kulina, who has ties to the neighborhood where the fire occurred.
This latest “Tatort” installment arrives as the series continues to gain recognition for its compelling storylines and strong characters. Recent reports highlight the growing prominence of the Kulina and Azadi duo within the landscape of German crime dramas.
