The skies over parts of Tehran darkened on Sunday following overnight Israeli strikes on oil depots, with thick smoke rising above the capital, Iranian media reported.
“Although there is cloud cover in Tehran today, the current darkening of the sky is not natural and is due to a combination of smoke and clouds,” a representative from the Iranian Meteorological Organization’s crisis center said, according to state news agency IRNA.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency issued warnings about health risks from sulfur and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere, which could become dangerous in combination with rain. Residents were advised to remain indoors if possible should precipitation occur, the Iranian news agency cautioned.
Israel reported striking several oil depots in the Iranian capital overnight, stating they were used to supply military infrastructure, according to the German Press Agency (DPA).
Iran’s state television, IRIB, reported that the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed a petroleum refinery had been targeted. The strikes represent a significant escalation in regional tensions, raising concerns about a wider conflict.
