Telefónica is partnering with Satellite Connect Europe to explore direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity as a way to expand mobile network access across Europe, particularly in Spain and Germany. The collaboration, announced on March 2, 2026, will focus on integrating satellite capabilities with Telefónica’s existing 4G and 5G infrastructure.
The companies emphasized that the goal is not to replace terrestrial mobile networks, but to complement them, enhancing network resilience in remote areas or during exceptional circumstances. This move reflects a growing industry trend toward utilizing satellite technology to address connectivity gaps.
Addressing Connectivity Limitations
Telefónica stated its support for the development of satellite services that align with European regulatory frameworks and spectrum usage requirements. The company intends to continue collaborating with stakeholders to shape the future of D2D satellite connectivity in Europe.
According to discussions at a press event in Barcelona, satellite connectivity offers a potential solution for areas where traditional infrastructure is limited. “By exploring modern direct-to-device satellite technologies, Telefónica aims to deepen its understanding of how satellite connectivity can complement advanced mobile networks and help address connectivity needs in remote areas across Europe,” said Andrea Folgueiras, a Telefónica executive.
