Slovak viewers are losing access to a long-standing television service as teletext is phased out by broadcasters across the country. While JOJ Group quietly discontinued teletext last month, public broadcaster STVR will finish the service in just a few days.
JOJ Group stopped providing teletext on all of its television channels as of January 1, 2026, a move that occurred with little public notice. According to Matej Dedinsky, marketing manager for the group, the decision is linked to the cessation of free-to-air broadcasting via antenna, after which the broadcaster also stopped offering the supplementary service. Živé.sk reported on the change.
STVR to Discontinue Teletext Service in March
STVR will follow suit at the end of February, terminating its teletext service on March 1, 2026. “The reason for This represents the technological obsolescence of this platform and its long-term low usage, which no longer corresponds to the costs of its operation. Teletext was historically an important service at a time when the internet was not a common part of households, but in recent years its importance has naturally declined and a large part of the Slovak market has already stopped providing it,” STVR stated on its website.
The public broadcaster assures that information will remain accessible through its website stvr.sk, news portal spravy.stvr.sk, mobile application Správy, and the :24 news channel. This transition reflects a broader industry trend as broadcasters shift to digital platforms.
Teletext Served Viewers for Decades
Commercial broadcaster TV Markíza discontinued teletext several years ago, and TA3 never included it in its broadcasting. Teletext first appeared in Slovakia in 1988 as part of the then-Czechoslovak Television and, for many viewers, represented a quick first access point to news and sports results in the pre-internet era. Today, digital platforms have taken over that role.
