Thai MP Defends Vote for Prime Minister, Cites Democratic Process

A member of Thailand’s Pheu Thai Party has defended the party’s decision to vote for Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister, asserting the move followed standard parliamentary procedure. The explanation comes after criticism surrounding the vote, particularly following the Bhumjaithai Party’s victory as the leading party in recent elections.

Thongtham Vejjayachai, a list-MP for Pheu Thai, posted a statement on social media addressing the backlash and attempts to blame his party for supporting Charnvirakul. He affirmed that the unanimous decision by himself and fellow party members was a legitimate function of a parliamentary democracy. “It is not something unusual or contrary to the principles of governance in any way,” Vejjayachai stated.

Vejjayachai explained that the Bhumjaithai Party, having secured the most votes from the public, was rightfully positioned to lead the formation of the new government. He added that Pheu Thai received an invitation to join the coalition and, following Bhumjaithai’s success in securing a majority in the House of Representatives, the process proceeded according to established norms. This move allows the country to move forward without structural impediments, he said.

Vejjayachai emphasized that the outcome for the Thai people is more essential than political maneuvering. He stated that the decision to join the coalition government aims to ensure that the Pheu Thai Party’s campaign promises are incorporated into the government’s core policies. “To ensure that the pledges made to the brothers and sisters are not lost, but will be pushed to happen concretely,” he said, requesting that the public await further updates on the party’s work for the common good.
