The investigation into the death of Corporal Second Carlos Palacios Muñoz in Punta Arenas has led to a third arrest, this time of an Army non-commissioned officer who was present during the incident. Palacios, 25, died during swimming exercises amid strong winds, reportedly due to negligent instructions from superiors. A captain and sergeant previously detained are similarly implicated in the instructions given during the exercise.

A third arrest was made Tuesday in connection with the investigation into the death of Corporal Second Carlos Palacios Muñoz, which occurred last Wednesday, March 4th, at the Chorrillos Armored Brigade Regiment in Punta Arenas.

According to reports, the new arrest is of an Army non-commissioned officer who was present at the time of the tragedy. This brings the total number of military personnel detained for alleged responsibility in the incident to three.

The victim, a 25-year-old man from Puente Alto, was conducting swimming tests in a lagoon within the military grounds when he drowned. Preliminary findings suggest the tests were carried out despite strong winds, leading to negligent instructions from officers in charge.

Other Army Personnel Detained in Corporal’s Death

On March 5th, investigators detained a captain and a first sergeant. According to exclusive reporting from Radio Bío Bío, both are directly linked to the instructions given during the exercise, which reportedly deviated from established protocols for this type of training.

The Corporal Palacios had traveled to the Magallanes Region to take these tests in order to qualify for special units within the Army.

Following his death, his body was transported to Santiago. The Homicide Brigade of the PDI continues to investigate the circumstances of the incident and determine any potential criminal liability.
