Tiesj Benoot will miss the upcoming classics season after undergoing surgery for a lumbar hernia, his team announced on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

The 31-year-old Belgian rider experienced back pain during his winter training, which ultimately required surgical intervention. This marks the first time in his professional career that Benoot will be sidelined for the spring classics, a period of the season central to his racing identity.

“It is a real disappointment to miss the classics for the first time in my career,” Benoot said. “I will be the biggest fan for my teammates on TV. I am highly motivated to return stronger than ever.”

Decathlon CMA CGM Team medical director Jacky Maillot confirmed the surgery was successful, stating, “Tiesj Benoot was successfully operated on this week for a lumbar hernia. He is now starting his rehabilitation phase, and his return to competition will depend on his progress.”

Benoot’s career has been highlighted by a victory at the Strade Bianche in 2018, and he has consistently been a strong contender in major one-day races like the Tour of Flanders and the Amstel Gold Race. Known for his endurance and tactical positioning, Benoot has become a key figure in the spring classics peloton. The classics are a crucial part of the professional cycling calendar, often determining a rider’s season success.

The team will now adjust its plans for the classics campaign without its designated leader. Benoot’s absence is a significant blow to the French squad, but they remain focused on supporting their remaining riders.
